The flash that captures the wearer also makes the dress visible
Paparazzi Lover converts photographic attention into light: the garment reserves its most brilliant presence for the moment cameras turn towards it.
The work comments on the duality of fame—the attraction and admiration created by media attention, set against its invasive scrutiny. Instead of simply receiving that gaze, the dress uses it as the condition for its own transformation.
Sixty-two LEDs are embedded in the garment and connected to sensors that detect camera flashes in real time. Without flash photography the dress remains understated; when a flash arrives, light spreads across its surface and the wearer reclaims the centre of the scene.

Between photographs, the dress remains restrained and its electronic system waits for a sudden change in ambient light.

Sensors register the short, intense pulse of a camera flash in real time.

The 62 LEDs respond across the garment, returning the photographer’s light and making the wearer the focal point.
03 · Reflection
Attention becomes both input and spectacle
The camera attempts to capture the star, yet its own flash activates the performance it is trying to record.
This feedback loop redistributes agency among photographer, wearer and garment. Media attention remains invasive, but it also becomes a material the wearer can appropriate. The work holds the love–hate relation of celebrity culture in one playful interaction: observation exposes the body while simultaneously giving the dress its power.
Flash sensors turn photographic attention into an immediate luminous response.
Conceived and developed for the 2012 exhibition in Vienna.
